One State / One Story

Indiana Humanities and JCPL present:

One State / One Story Community Read

Indiana Humanities’ One State / One Story program invites Hoosiers to engage deeply with a book as part of a statewide conversation tied to the current theme. It is part of Indiana Humanities’ Advancing Racial Equity project, which supports discussions of history and memory and how engaging with our past can help us understand contemporary injustices and strive for racial equity.

Indiana Humanities is thrilled to announce the selection of Tiya Miles’ "All That She Carried: The Journey of Ashley’s Sack, a Black Family Keepsake" for this year's program.  Winner of the 2021 National Book Award in nonfiction, Miles’ work dives deeply into the history of a single object: a cotton sack embroidered with a few deceptively simple lines.

JCPL will also celebrate Juneteenth with the Indiana Humanities One State, One Story selection for children, "Freedom Over Me" by Ashley Bryan.
